Cusco City Tour Itinerary & Camelid Tour

    Activity 1 City Tour Cusco

Koricancha and the Convent of Santo Domingo

The convent was built on the spectacular Koricancha (golden enclosure). This was the most important temple where the cult of the Sun was carried out and whose walls were covered with solid sheets of gold. Today we can see the fine masonry that remains, since the conquerors took the rest and destroyed most of the temple to build the convent on top. Koricancha was also an observatory where priests kept track of major celestial events. Today some of the original architecture has been restored and it also houses an impressive collection of canvases from the Cusco School of Art.

    Sacsayhuamán

Sacsayhuamán, which means (satisfied falcon), is one of the most impressive sites built by the Incas. It is generally known as a military fortress. The stones on the wall are incredible, among which the largest weighs 128 tons. Until now, it has not been discovered. It has a clear explanation of how they were transported to the place. The Incas designed Cusco in the shape of a puma with Sacsayhuamán as the head that is still used today for the most important festival in Cusco, which is the Inti Raymi that is celebrated every June 24.

    Q’enqo

Q’enqo which means (labyrinth) in Quechua contains very impressive hand-carved sections of rocks, although some are already almost blurred, as different animals carved on it have been identified, as well as. the llama, condor and snakes. There are many zigzag channels on the top of the rock, they were probably used to pour chicha in sacrificial ceremonies. (a local fermented drink made from corn) Under the rock there are several caves and passages, which in turn lead us to an altar that was used for llama sacrifices. Archaeologists have discovered mummifications of people buried in these caves.

    Puka Pukara

Also called Puka Pukara (the red fortress) in Quechua. This is a small site and although the name indicates that it was a fortress, it appears to have had no defensive purpose. Since archeologists theorize that it could have been used to protect the Tambomachay water source.

    Tambomachay

The name means (resting place) in Quechua. It was the royal house of Inca Yupanqui when he went hunting in the surrounding area. This site was also thought to have been used as a Water Temple. There are some interesting aqueducts, canals and waterfalls carved in stone, designed to channel water flowing from a nearby stream.

Activity 2 Camelids & Pachamanca Tour

On this tour you will be able to appreciate the varieties of South American camelids such as llamas, alpacas, guanacos vicuñas and condors, as well as the manufacturing process in their Textile center where they all meet to work on garments, clothings and ornaments , using the spinning and dyeing techniques inherited by their ancestors hundreds of years ago.

    Guanacos

The guanaco is a species of mammal since it is part of the camelid family of South America. It is a wild animal, unlike the llama, which is domestic. It has fine bones with an approximate height of 1.60 meters and weighs about 180 kilograms of weight. Its name comes from Quechua (wanaku), since it is one of the few mammals that can drink salt water.

    Llamas

It was domesticated by the Andean peoples, Natives through artificial selection from the Guanaco. According to recent studies, this occurred in principle independently in time and space in sectors of northern Argentina, western Bolivia, northern Chile and southern Peru. This mammal was used to the maximum by the Inca empire since they used it as a pack animal and in turn obtained meat from it and its wool was used to make their clothings.

    Alpacas

Alpacas have a more curved and smaller silhouette unlike the llama. They also have a classic tuft of fiber that can be differentiated by color since they have many shades and can reach a height of 1.50 meters. And their average weight is 64 kilograms

    Vicunas

The Vicuña or also known as Llama (vicugna) its genus name is one of the wild South American camelids, which live in the high alpine areas of the former. Vicuñas are relatives of the llama and are now believed to be the wild ancestor of domesticated alpacas, which are bred for their fur as they produce small amounts of extremely fine wool which makes it very expensive because the animal alone It can be sheared every three years.

    Pachamanca

Pachamanca is a Peruvian dish with a lot of tradition and flavor since it maintains and preserves the ancestral form and preparation that is underground, the preparation is how our ancestors prepared it.

A dream trip with a dream team

I had the most wonderful time in my visit to Cuzco and Machu Picchu with Andean Road. Jim who is a native from Cuzco truly loves and knows his city by heart, he was able to recommend the best places and activities on that dreamlike spot. The trip by train to Machu Picchu town and the Inca citadel was well organized, I didn’t have to worry about the tickets or logistics and just focused on making great memories for life .
