Humantay lake tour itinerary from Cusco

Day 1 Cusco - Humantay Lagoon - Cusco

This spectacular day begins at 4:30 am when your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco. The journey lasts approximately 3 hours until we reach the starting point at Soraypampa, a picturesque village located in the Apurímac River Valley, at around 3,900 meters above sea level.

From there, we begin our hike along a path that gradually gains elevation. The landscape changes as we ascend, and after arriving at a small traditional village, we continue for about an hour and a half, climbing a steep trail that leads us to a unique viewpoint. Once we reach the top of the final hill, we are greeted with the breathtaking sight of Lake Humantay, its turquoise waters surrounded by towering peaks and an impressive glacier.

Along the hike, you’ll have a close-up view of the majestic Salkantay Mountain, considered one of the most sacred mountains in the Andean region, as well as the equally stunning Humantay Peak, rising to 5,917 meters above sea level. The fresh mountain air and serene Andean landscapes invite reflection and a deep connection with nature.

Local shamans, who follow ancient Andean traditions, often perform rituals and blessings when reaching the shores of the lake, a sacred place for the people of the region. This is an ideal moment for reflection, meditation, or simply enjoying the peacefulness of this unique setting.

Once we reach the lake, we take time to relax, enjoy a light snack, or offer thanks to Pachamama (Mother Earth) for the energy received. When we’re ready to hike again, we begin our descent back to Soraypampa, where a hot lunch awaits us, prepared with fresh ingredients while we enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains.

After a day full of beauty, nature, and culture, we embark on our return journey to Cusco, arriving in the city around 5 pm, where your guide will drop you off at your hotel, leaving you with unforgettable memories of a day spent in one of Peru’s most breathtaking landscapes.

How long does the Humantay Lake tour take?

The Humantay Lake tour typically lasts around 12 hours, starting with an early morning pick-up from your hotel at 4:00 AM and returning around 6:00 PM. This time includes the bus ride to the trailhead, the hike to the lake, time spent at the lake, and the return journey to your hotel.

What time does the Humantay Lake tour start?

The tour generally starts early in the morning, with hotel pickups between 4:00 and 5:00 AM, depending on the operator and location. You will want to confirm the exact pickup time with your tour operator in advance.

What is the difficulty level of the hike to Humantay Lake?

The hike is moderately challenging, especially due to the high altitude (4,200 meters or 13,780 feet). The terrain can be steep, and the thinner air might make breathing harder for those who aren’t accustomed to higher elevations. If you’re new to hiking or high-altitude activities, it’s essential to listen to your body and take breaks as needed.

Do I need to be acclimatized to high altitude before taking the Humantay Lake tour?

Yes, acclimatization is essential for the trek to avoid altitude sickness. It’s recommended to spend at least 2-3 days in Cusco or another high-altitude area to help your body adjust. This will improve your chances of handling the elevation better and enjoying the hike.

Can I visit Humantay Lake if I am not in good physical condition?

The hike can be strenuous, so if you’re not in good shape, it’s still possible to do it but might be more difficult. You can consider doing shorter hikes in the days before your tour to build stamina, or ask your operator for advice based on your fitness level. If necessary, there are also some alternative options, such as horseback riding, for the first part of the journey, but these may need to be arranged in advance.

Is the Humantay Lake tour suitable for children or seniors?

Children and seniors who are in good health and accustomed to light hiking at high altitudes can participate, but they should be prepared for the challenging conditions. Younger children and those with limited physical ability may struggle with the steep terrain and altitude, so consider the person’s fitness level before booking.

The tour includes round-trip transportation in a comfortable minibus or van. You’ll be picked up at your hotel in Cusco and driven to the trailhead at Soraypampa. From there, you will start your hike. After the hike, the bus will be waiting to take you back to Cusco.

Can I swim in Humantay Lake?

Swimming in the lake is not allowed due to the sacred significance of the area to local indigenous groups and the cold temperatures. Visitors are encouraged to respect the cultural importance of the site and enjoy the lake from designated areas.

What is the best time of year to visit Humantay Lake?

The best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. These months typically offer clear skies and better hiking conditions. During the rainy season (November to March), the trails can be muddy, and rain can make the hike more challenging, so be prepared for possible weather changes.

A dream trip with a dream team

I had the most wonderful time in my visit to Cuzco and Machu Picchu with Andean Road. Jim who is a native from Cuzco truly loves and knows his city by heart, he was able to recommend the best places and activities on that dreamlike spot. The trip by train to Machu Picchu town and the Inca citadel was well organized, I didn’t have to worry about the tickets or logistics and just focused on making great memories for life .
