Recommendations for the Choquequirao 4 days

    • Get physically prepared: This trek is considered advanced, with long walks through steep terrain. If you’re not used to long hikes or high altitudes, it’s essential to train a bit beforehand. Doing long walks with some weight in your backpack and building your stamina will help you adapt better to the effort.
    • Acclimatization is key: The trek takes place at high altitudes, and altitude sickness is a real concern. Arriving in Cusco a few days before the trek to acclimatize is essential to avoid issues during the hike. Spend at least 2 days in Cusco to give your body time to adjust to the altitude.
    • Pack only what you need: The key to a comfortable trek is packing light. Bring only the essentials for 4 days: clothes for all types of weather, your sleeping bag, sunscreen, water, and some snacks for the walk. Think about your comfort and what you’ll really need. Your backpack should not weigh more than 10% of your body weight.
    • Sun protection: The altitude and proximity to the sun make UV rays much stronger. It’s essential to use sunscreen (and reapply it during the day), wear sunglasses, and bring a hat or cap. Skin can burn quickly, even when it’s cloudy.
    • Listen to your body: It’s normal to feel tired during a trek like this, but if you experience severe pain or dizziness, it’s important to take a break and drink water. Altitude sickness can occur, and if symptoms are severe, descending is the best option to prevent serious problems.
    • Prepare for the weather: While there may be sun, rain is common, especially during the rainy season (November to March). Bring a waterproof jacket and make sure your backpack is water-resistant to protect your belongings. Nights can be cold, so pack warm clothing.
    • Don’t underestimate the difficulty: The trek has long and steep ascents. The heat and humidity may also make it feel more exhausting than expected. Take your time, don’t rush, and allow your body to adjust to the terrain.
    • Stay hydrated: During the trek, you’ll be walking long distances, so staying hydrated is crucial. Carry enough water and refill your bottles at water sources along the way, but make sure to have a filter or purification tablets to ensure the water is safe.
    • Enjoy every step: No matter how difficult it may get, don’t forget to enjoy the beauty around you. The views, the flora, the fauna, and the sense of accomplishment are what make this trek so special. It’s a challenge, but each step brings an incredible reward.

A dream trip with a dream team

I had the most wonderful time in my visit to Cuzco and Machu Picchu with Andean Road. Jim who is a native from Cuzco truly loves and knows his city by heart, he was able to recommend the best places and activities on that dreamlike spot. The trip by train to Machu Picchu town and the Inca citadel was well organized, I didn’t have to worry about the tickets or logistics and just focused on making great memories for life .
