Recommendations for the 5 days Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

    • Acclimatization is key: Cusco is over 3,400 meters above sea level, so it’s essential to acclimate to the altitude before starting the trek. Spend at least two days in Cusco or nearby areas before beginning the hike to avoid altitude sickness. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol.
    • Pack light but complete: You can carry a maximum of 7 kg in your backpack (this includes your sleeping bag, clothes, and personal items). Make sure to pack only the essentials: light, comfortable clothes that dry quickly. Hiking boots are a must, along with a waterproof jacket in case the rain catches you.
    • Prepare your body: Although the route is challenging, you don’t need to be an athlete to complete the trek. However, being in good physical shape is important. Practice long walks in the month leading up to your trip, and if possible, hike at higher altitudes to better prepare your body.
    • Beware of the weather: The weather can be unpredictable. It can be sunny and hot during the day, but nights can get very cold. Always bring warm clothing and prepare for rain, especially if traveling during the rainy season (November to March). A waterproof poncho could be a lifesaver in those moments.
    • Enjoy the trail, not just the destination: Often, travelers focus only on reaching Machu Picchu, but the true beauty of this experience lies in the Inca Trail itself. In addition, take a moment to appreciate the stunning landscapes, the Inca ruins, and the local flora and fauna. The journey is as meaningful as the destination.
    • Respect the environment: Don’t leave any trash behind. The Inca Trail is a very special place, and you should help preserve it. In addition, always take back whatever you bring and use the designated restrooms along the way.

A dream trip with a dream team

I had the most wonderful time in my visit to Cuzco and Machu Picchu with Andean Road. Jim who is a native from Cuzco truly loves and knows his city by heart, he was able to recommend the best places and activities on that dreamlike spot. The trip by train to Machu Picchu town and the Inca citadel was well organized, I didn’t have to worry about the tickets or logistics and just focused on making great memories for life .
