Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you'll have some free time to check into your hotel and get settled. Later, we'll meet at the restaurant where our guide will provide important information to help you prepare for the next day's adventure, ensuring you're ready for the visit to the stunning Machu Picchu.
Day 4 Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco
This day is the most important, because you will visit Machu Picchu! You will have a guided tour of approximately 2 hours, where our guide will show you the most important places.
At the end of the tour our guide will say goodbye to the group, but that does not mean the tour is over. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and take it slow on your first day to help your body adjust.
- Pack only the essentials. You'll need a comfortable backpack (30-40L), but remember that the porters will carry your gear (up to 7 kg). Only bring what’s necessary: comfortable clothes, trekking boots, a good sleeping bag, and personal items.
- The weather can change drastically during the trek. In the mornings, it can be cold and windy, but it will get warmer by midday. Pack layers such as a thermal shirt, fleece jacket, rain poncho, and waterproof pants. Layering will help you adjust to the varying temperatures throughout the day.
- It's important to stay hydrated, especially at high altitudes. Bring a reusable water bottle or hydration system (like a Camelbak) and fill it up regularly at the camps. Make sure to also bring high-energy snacks like granola bars, nuts, or fruit to keep your energy up throughout the trek.
- The Salkantay Trek can be physically challenging, so it's important to pace yourself and take breaks as needed. Listen to your body, and don’t rush the hike. If you feel tired, take a rest and enjoy the scenery.
- Wear sturdy, comfortable trekking boots with good ankle support to handle the rocky terrain. Make sure your boots are well broken in before the trek to avoid blisters. You may also want to bring a pair of lightweight sandals or shoes for use at the camp.
- The weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. Even if it's sunny at the start of the day, rain or cold weather can follow. Bring a waterproof jacket, rain poncho, and warm layers to stay comfortable and dry.
- The trek can be tiring, so make sure to rest well each night. After a long day of hiking, take time to relax, eat a nutritious meal, and hydrate before going to bed. A good night’s sleep will prepare you for the challenges of the following day.

I had the most wonderful time in my visit to Cuzco and Machu Picchu with Andean Road. Jim who is a native from Cuzco truly loves and knows his city by heart, he was able to recommend the best places and activities on that dreamlike spot.
