Try to prepare with regular cardio exercises like hiking, running, or walking with a backpack to simulate the terrain and the weight you will carry.
- Acclimate to the altitude: The trek reaches high altitudes (up to 4,650 meters / 15,255 feet), so it’s crucial to arrive in Cusco a few days before the trek to acclimate. Spend time exploring the city and avoid strenuous activities until your body adjusts to the altitude to minimize the risk of altitude sickness.
- Pack light: Keep your pack light to make your trek easier. Only bring the essentials like a small day pack, a good quality sleeping bag (if not provided), warm clothing, a rain jacket, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and toiletries. Make sure your boots are comfortable and well broken-in before starting the trek.
- Dress in layers: The weather can be unpredictable and temperatures can vary dramatically, so it’s recommended to wear layers that you can adjust as needed. For example, lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing for the day and warmer layers for the chilly nights at higher altitudes.
- Hydrate and eat well: Stay hydrated throughout the trek, and drink water regularly to avoid dehydration at high altitudes. We’ll provide meals during the trek, but you may want to bring high-energy snacks like nuts, energy bars, or dried fruit to keep your energy levels up.
- Be ready for the weather: The weather in the Salkantay region can be unpredictable. Although it’s mostly dry during the trekking season (April to October), it’s still possible to encounter rain, so always carry a poncho or waterproof jacket.
- Bring cash for souvenirs: There are small villages along the route where you can buy souvenirs, snacks, or drinks. Make sure to have some cash on hand, preferably in small denominations, as many shops do not accept cards.
